Bronze forging, also known as Kansa forging, is not only a traditional Indian technique for making functional utensils but also an art form. The skillful artisans who practice this craft create exquisite and intricately designed pieces that are both beautiful and functional.

The process of bronze forging involves heating the bronze to a high temperature and then hammering it into shape on an anvil. The artisan will then use chisels and other tools to add decorative details and designs to the piece.

Many traditional Indian utensils, such as thali plates, tumblers, and serving bowls, are made using the bronze forging technique. These items are often decorated with intricate designs and patterns, and may be finished with a polished or matte surface.

Traditionally it was considered best to have food in Kansa plates. The process of making starts with making metal ingots with 78-80 % copper and 22-20 % tin mixture. The ingot is then repeatedly heated and beaten by a group of artisans to specific shapes. The finer finishing is done using rubber headed hammers and then a coating of salt and clay applied to firm up the metal. Then the Kansa ware is worked with fine hammers and lathe work to give the shine and finish. It takes 23 operations to make one Kansa ware This highly skilled craft takes years of experience.

Bronze forging is considered a dying art form in some parts of India, as modern manufacturing techniques have replaced traditional craftsmanship. However, there are still some skilled artisans who practice this technique and create beautiful and unique pieces of art that showcase the beauty and versatility of bronze as a material.
